The MTA’s longtime orange-and-yellow seated subway cars are riding off into the sunset next year.
The state-run agency in 2025 plans to slowly retire its remaining 1,700-plus R46, R62/62A, and R68/R68A subway trains, which were rolled out in the 1980s, PIX-11 News reported citing the agency’s 2025-2029 capital plan.
These trains — which are also known for their back-to-back double seaters — are still running on the F,N, Q, B, 1, 3, 6 and other lines.
They’re being replaced by with the new R211/R211S cars, which already are running on the A and C lines. The shiny new subway cars — which feature wider doors, security cameras and digital displays — have blue and gold seats.
