An additional 250 National Guard members will be deployed in the New York City subway system as part of a continued safety effort, Gov. Kathy Hochul announced Wednesday.

It builds on the 750 National Guard members who were deployed in the subway system in March to support local law enforcement after a spike in violent crimes at the time.

Hochul said the National Guard members are meant to act as a deterrent to crime and provide an increased sense of security for subway riders.

The governor said the initial deployment of 750 National Guard members in March aided in reducing crime in the subway system.

“It made an extraordinary difference,” Hochul said. “Thanks to our five-point plan to improve subway safety, subway crime is down 10% just since last March. And only two years since the year 1970 have we had fewer subway crimes than we had this past year.”
