Pete Hegseth, President-elect Donald Trump’s pick for defense secretary, is facing tough questions today during his confirmation hearing with the Senate Armed Services Committee.
Democrats are in particular taking issue with Hegseth’s past comments on women and diversity in the military. Hegseth is also being questioned on an allegation of sexual assault and claims of excessive drinking — allegations he has denied.
Republicans have largely seemed to indicate support for Hegseth. Sen. Joni Ernst, seen as a key vote, began her questioning by introducing a letter from a Hegseth supporter and gave him a chance to explain his comments on women.
